“I was born and raised in the Aegean part of Turkey, and I feel a strong attachment to the Aegean geography. I am very romantic about the flora; daphne, olive trees, fig trees, oregano, lavender and a million other plants that I don’t know the names of. I feel an existential closeness to all those plants which can grow with very little water, which are sturdy, dry, fuzzy and pale green. They sometimes even blossom. I appreciate their determination.
I like the scent of oregano in the air. It is one my favorite things in this world. And I like the rich history, the layers of life that are present at the same time. We used to run around Ionian ruins as kids. Play football next to an ancient theatre. As kids we didn’t question these things back then but later on in life I appreciated the Ionian spirit around me. It excited me and motivated me to enter an idealist space. Not everything was so romantic though. There are also the empty villages. A melancholic side of the story. People who came from far places living in houses that used to belong to other people. Always very nicely built houses. I used to think as a kid I would have missed it so much if I had to leave a house like those behind. These are thoughts and feelings I carry with me, it is a part of my personal make up. I never worked on and expressed these thoughts and feelings of mine through my artistic work so far, and I see this project as an opportunity to share them with others and to contribute to a project .”
